Muffin Break Baker's Challenge

The heat was rising in the lead-up to the 2011 Muffin Break Bakers' Challenge Grand Final Bake-off, which will be held in Sydney on 18 and 19 October.

After knocking-out close to 100 competitors from across Australia to make it to the Grand Final 'Bake-off' of the round-robin competition, the four finalists were in the running to be named 2011 Muffin Break Bakers' Challenge Champion are:

Vannesa O'Conner - Muffin Break Townsville Stockland, QLD
Brett Mitchell - Muffin Break Erina Fair, NSW / ACT
Aaron Tedesco - Muffin Break Whitford, WA / SA
Nicole McKenzie - Muffin Break Warnambool, VIC

During the Grand Final event, the four bakers bake-off before a panel of expert judges who assessed the finalists on their general baking skills and baking knowledge, as well as their kitchen-cleanliness and food-safety skills. Each baker had only 15 minutes to bake and present three traditional muffin flavours Choc Chip, Blueberry and Apple Cinnamon.

All four contenders like all Muffin Break bakers have been rising early at 4.00am daily to develop their technique while baking Muffin Break's variety of flavours fresh in-store.

As well as the glory of claiming the national title, the winner of the 2011 Muffin Break Bakers' Challenge will receive a $2,000 Visa Gift Card to add to the $500 cash-prize each finalist has already received as his / her reward for making it to the Grand Final.

And the winner for 2011 Baker's Challenge is:

Nicole McKenzie from Muffin Break Warnambool
Muffin Break cooking whiz Nicole McKenzie proved she is the best baker in the land after taking out the Muffin Break Bakers' Challenge for the second year in a row. The win cemented Nicole's status as a baking guru and she was ecstatic with the result, after setting out to prove she could take top spot again.

The 26-year-old has been whipping-up a storm with Muffin Break for the last five years and knows what it takes to create a delicious, moist muffin. "A great baker needs to be very dedicated to the job and baking," Nicole said. "They also need to be very efficient with their time and well prepared."

Nicole had a few top tips for baking muffins which are - don't over-mix your mix, always swell the muffins in the pan before putting them into the oven so they are perfectly domed, and make sure they are presented well so they look tasty and delicious to eat.

Each year, the very best of this supremely talented group take part in the exciting and highly anticipated 2011 Foodco Barista Competition which recognises quality and excellence in coffee preparation and service. The judging criteria included preparation of machinery/workstation, technical skills of barista, sensory evaluation of coffee, presentation of coffee and coffee knowledge.

This year, we were pleased to announce the following regional finalists from Muffin Break
QLD: Grace Tana of Muffin Break Cairns Central, QLD
NSW/ACT: Caitlin Johns of Muffin Break Woden, ACT
VIC/TAS: Jennifer Abela of Muffin Break Werribee, VIC
SA/WA Leah McKeown of Muffin Break Pinjarra, WA
NZ Nelson Veerasingam of Muffin Break Milford, NZ
Wildcard: Michelle Podmore of Muffin Break Charlestown Square, NSW

And now a drumroll please
Congratulations to the Muffin Break 2011 Foodco Barista Competition Winner:

Caitlin Johns of Muffin Break Woden, ACT
Caitlin's signature beverage was "Christmas In July" which she described as a white choc peppermint latte and is made up of a thick layer of white chocolate syrup, a dash of peppermint syrup, a layer of crushed candy canes with an espresso shot topped with latte milk and a choc snowflake design. It is accompanied by a small piece of homemade chocolate bark, which the flavour of the drink is roughly based on. It is a sweet drink, yet the sweetness doesn't overpower the flavour of the espresso, and it leaves a fresh minty aftertaste in the mouth. It is the perfect drink for those who do not generally enjoy strong coffee.
