Healthy Eating

Heart Health - Healthy eating and Lifestyle factors

Looking after your heart is essential for long term health and wellbeing. For optimal heart health include a variety of different foods to make sure you get enough fibre, omega-3 fats and antioxidants. Heart healthy foods to enjoy regularly include:

  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Wholegrains – like wholemeal bread, rolled oats and barley
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Fish
  • Soy products – like soybeans, tofu, soy milk and yoghurt
  • Legumes – like kidney beans, lentils, baked beans and chickpeas
  • Vegetable oils – like sunflower, safflower, canola and olive oils

These foods contain a variety of unique substances that protect the heart and help maintain blood cholesterol levels and blood pressure.

Eat fewer…

  • Foods high in saturated and trans fats, such as fatty meats, cream, butter, and unhealthy takeaway and snack foods
  • High sodium (salty) foods

Foods that are high in saturated and trans fat have a negative effect on blood cholesterol levels, whereas salty foods put pressure on the heart by raising blood pressure. That’s why it is these foods that should be minimised for optimal heart health.

To keep your heart in top shape it’s also important to avoid smoking, manage stress levels and keep active. Overall, a healthy lifestyle that includes a nutritious eating plan, time out for relaxation and plenty of daily exercise will go a long way toward keeping your heart in good shape.

At Muffin Break we use healthy canola oil in our muffins to keep the good fats up and bad fats down. And for the most heart-healthy ingredients, look out for our Soy and Linseed varieties.
