Muffin Break Barista Carl Sara
was ranked 3rd in the world when he represented New Zealand at the 2007 World Barista Championship held in Tokyo on 2 August. The contest involved competitors from 45 nations around the world.

This win makes Carl New Zealands all-time highest-ranking barista. This is his 3rd time in the top six at the World Championships and he is also the current National Barista Champion, having won that title three times.

Carl is involved in Muffin Break's training programme & sets the barista training standards and programme for all Muffin Break baristas nationally.

Background on the World Barista Championships

The World Barista Championship is the international premier barista competition. Winners of national awards from 45 countries compete for the title, preparing and serving 12 coffees four espresso, four cappuccino and four signature drinks in just 15 minutes. After a preliminary round, the judges assigned to both technical and sensory elements of each coffee, select the top six baristas to compete in the nerve-wracking finals round. They have to be quick, they have to be creative, they have to explain the characteristics of their signature coffee and they have to be an outstanding barista.

Congratulations to Carl Sara and Rob Dempsey for taking out the top two places at the 2006 Regional South Island Barista Competition.

At Muffin Break we are constantly striving for perfection. That’s why our stores are the best place around for a great espresso coffee. In fact, we’re so focused on perfection that at the 2006 Regional South Island Barista Competition, Muffin Break took out the two top places. In recent years, Muffin Break has held the title of National Barista Champion twice, with a further three finalist. Muffin Break has also represented New Zealand twice at the World Barista Finals, placing fourth and sixth. Now that really is a pattern of perfection.
